MARE AUX JONCS: A hike to the End of the Rainbow

The Mare aux Joncs waterfall may not pop up on the typical “Top 10 of what to do in Mauritius” list, but it is definitely one of the most unique and beautiful places on the island. The waterfall lies deep inside the Black River National Park. Similar to the Colophane Trail l wrote about a couple of weeks ago, you can reach it from the National Park visitor center.

The Hike:

Mare aux Jones can only be accessed by food. The trail leading to the waterfall is about 4.5km long and elevates about 560m. Overall, the trail is quite easy to do even for less experienced and less trained hikers. The biggest challenges on the hike are the countless river crossings which will either test your balance or will wet your feet.

From the parking lot you reach the start of the trail in only a couple of minutes. Follow the signs and keep left where the path splits. From there you will find more signs and orange markings which show you the way.

After about 1.5 hours of hiking along a river, following a simple trail and climbing over smaller boulders you will reach the waterfall.

Mare aux Joncs Waterfall

What makes the Mare aux Joncs so unique is a combination of its height and the last couple of meters of its fall. About 3.5m before it reaches the ground, it hits a big rock formation. This creates a lot of spray which, if viewed from the right angle, results into the creation of rainbows. The closer you get to the waterfall and the rainbow, the rounder it becomes. With a bit of luck you will be able to see a complete circle rainbow! Luckily there are a couple of big boulders on the left side of the waterfall, which makes it possible to get close to it without having to wade through the water.

It is a very nice place to chill in the sun and enjoy lunch. If you want, you can take a shower in the waterfall while being surrounded by rainbows.
On the right of the waterfall you will find a cliff with a ledge and a small cave. If you get up there you will find a nice view over the surrounding jungle(as seen below). Be aware that this involves some serious climbing and is very dangerous.

The Mare aux Joncs is nice hike which can basically be done in half a day. The stunning rainbows and surrounding jungle make it a truly awesome experience. Its one of the few places where you can actually reach the end of the rainbow and find out that, like every circle, it has none.
