In the last week of July Sindbad Ltd. and Lux Sports will hold the 10th edition of Kiteival Festival. This unique festival gives kite surfers of different skill levels the opportunity to group up and ride long distances from one lagoon to another. Participants will be taken to all the kite-able lagoons on the island and can measure their skills against each other in amateur competitions.
Places of Kiteival
La Prairie to Le Morne
The first bays on the list are La Prairie and Le Morne Public beach. The bays are located the south west of the island and 7 nautical miles (ca. 13 km) apart from each other. They are dominated by the presence of Le Morne and the so called Underwater Waterfall to its feet.
Pointe d’Esn to Trou d’Eau Douce
The second trip takes participants up the east coast from Pointe d’Esn to Trou d’Eau Douce. It is a 10 nautical miles (18 km) long surf, along several bays and the famous Ile aux Cerfs.
Roche Noires to Anse la Raie
The last day trip goes along the north east coast. Starting in Roche Noires and ending in Anse la Raie, this surf is the longest of them all, with 11 nautical miles or nearly 20 km. The route will cross the Poudre d’Or Fishing Reserve and Amber Island.
Organization of Kiteival
Participants of the Kiteival and their companions will stay at Tamassa Resort in Bel Ombre at the south coast and at Merville Beach Hotel near Grand Baie in the north. The organizers will provide transport for the surfers as well as their companions to the starting and finishing points of each trip. Also Dinners and often lunches are provided.
As kite surfers of different levels of experience will join the event, also safety is important to the organizers. Therefore, every trip will be lead by experienced local surfers and followed by a boat that can assist in case something goes wrong.
During the event there also will be several amateur competions in the disciplines free style, race and wave.
Kiteival is a unique event. Seldom you can see so many kites in the air using the same downwind and just going for the distance. It is going to be a spectacle for surfers and spectators alike!
